Adelaide University Crest

EPC 2002

The 29th Australasian Experimental Psychology Conference will be held in Adelaide, South Australia, from the 5th to the 7th of April 2002, hosted by Adelaide University. As in previous years, this conference provides a forum for researchers to present work across the broad spectrum of experimental psychology. The conference will commence after lunch on the 5th, and finish mid-afternoon on the 7th, allowing some delegates to fly in on the first morning, and fly out on the last afternoon. Please note that the 6th Conference of the Australasian Cognitive Science Society is being held in Western Australia from Wednesday 3rd April to Friday 5th April 2002. Every effort will be during scheduling presentations to accommodate delegates wishing to attend both conferences.

Registration

The deadline for registration is March 1st, 2002, with registrations withdrawn after March 15th, 2002 being subject to a $50 processing fee.

The registration fee for the conference is A$150, with a discount fee of A$100 for students enrolled half-time or greater (proof of eligibility is required). This fee includes catered lunches and morning and afternoon teas during the conference (with vegetarian options), the welcoming reception, and the conference materials. Additional tickets for the welcoming reception, to be held on the evening of Friday the 5th, are available at a cost of $20.

Please register by printing and completing this form (MSWord), or this form (PDF), and sending it to the address specified. Please let us know if you encounter any difficulties.

Abstract Submission - CLOSED

The deadline for submitting abstracts is February 1st, 2002. Please note that it is important that this deadline is met since, in a departure from previous years, the Australian Journal of Psychology will publish the conference abstracts in a regular volume of the journal near the time of the conference itself.

The organising committee has also decided that there will be no poster session this year. If you wish to submit an abstract for oral presentation, please complete this abstract submission form, and SEND IT ELECTRONICALLY to Michael Lee. The form is an MSWord document. If completing this electronically presents difficulties, please make contact so that alternative arrangements can be made.

Conference Dinner

The conference dinner will be held on Saturday the 6th April at the historic Earl of Aberdeen Hotel on Hurtle Square in the heart of Adelaide within walking distance of the conference venue at Adelaide University. The cost for the dinner will be an additional $50 which includes a three-course meal (vegetarian options available) and drinks consisting of Cooper's beers, Hardy's fine wines, soft drinks and coffee. John Taplin has volunteered to provide vitamin supplements as required.

Conference Venue

The conference will be held at the North Terrace campus of the University of Adelaide, on Level 5 of the Union building (reference E6 on the campus map shown below).

Accommodation

The organising committee is conscious of the need to minimise the accommodation costs of delegates, and particularly those of postgraduate students. Unfortunately, residential college accommodation is unavailable during the period of the conference. In response, rather than providing delegates with a single accommodation option, we are providing a list of alternatives.

Each of the following accommodation options is in the city of Adelaide, within a short walk (max 15 minutes) of the conference location.  Prices range from more than $150 per night down to $35 per night, with the style and quality of the accommodation varying accordingly. We hope, by providing these options, delegates will find accommodation that suits their preferences and budget. In addition, by providing information at this time, we hope delegates are able to make early reservations to secure their preferred option.

The details for each of the accommodation options are taken from the current  RAA tourist guide (2001-2002 edition, pp. 105-107), and the web sites of the hotels and motels. Please contact us if you encounter any discrepancy or difficulty, and we will update the information.

A map of the city of Adelaide is available here in pdf format. The North Terrace campus of the University of Adelaide is (essentially) bounded by North Terrace, Kintore Avenue, Frome Road, and Victoria Drive.

Program

The conference program, with links to the abstracts, is provided in the table below. It is also provided here as a pdf file. The presentations have been organised into three streams. Broadly speaking, Stream A is language and psychometrics, Stream B is vision and biology, and Stream C is cognition.

Each presentation has been allocated a half-hour time slot, consisting of a 20 minute presentation, 5 minutes for questions, and 5 minutes to allow the next presenter to set-up and delegates to move between streams.

We have tried to meet a range of constraints and preferences in scheduling the presentations. There is limited flexibility for change, but if you have a good reason for making a request, please contact me, and I will forward them to our complaints department.

A registration desk will be open before the conference starts Friday afternoon, and also Saturday morning.
